Fred Nagorny, teacher at GOBELINS, L’école de l’image, presents to us the theme of Summer School 2014 :
This edition of the Summer School in 2014 will be a comprehensive exercise on characterisation. We will offer to participants, as usual, a series of conferences followed by practical workshops but this time the participants will primarily focus on one animation exercise for which the inspiration will be Paris.
This year, we want to give our students the opportunity to work on their animation techniques while also profiting from the richness of the unique Parisian environment which will provide the backdrop for the Summer School.
The theme will cover the identity of a character, their personality and their characteristics. We will study the actions and movements essential to their expressions as it is the quality and relevance of this movement that makes the character and the story believable to the viewer.
The exercise we ask our participants to accomplish therefore focuses on the expression of the characters’ personalities and moods through their movement. Importantly, we will ask them to go out into Paris and witness, first-hand, such gestation. This allows participants to draw upon this authenticity when recreating the movement in their animations and helps develop their observation skills.
Thus, the participants will have to explore, watch and observe Paris. They will go in search of interesting things around the city and must let themselves be surprised, amused and moved by them so that their works are personal interpretations of “La Vie Parisienne,” and not the familiar stereotype. From their observations, the participants will produce animated 2D or 3D scenes lasting 5 to 10 seconds.
The strength of a group as diverse as that of the Summer School is that we have a nice variety of exercises and approaches from which everyone can reap the benefits. The method, whereby the students learn from each other, has been developed at GOBELINS over many years and makes the learning process more efficient, allowing participants to learn more and in less time, with benefits being both individual and communal.
Finally, it will be demonstrated that quality in animation goes beyond stereotypes. What will be studied is how to create characters and stories for which the viewer feels empathy. Animation itself is a universal language that can capture personality, without the need of cultural generalisations.
