Intervention sur la formation en cinéma d’animation à l’école des Gobelins

The courses at the Gobelins School of Animation require three years of study, though the real lessons begin after the students have acquired a basic knowledge of how to produced animated films.

The three years of training consist of: 25 students in the 1st year, 25 students in the 2nd year and 30 the third and final year, during which an additional number of ~5 students can join the final year by competitive examination.
General entry requirements consist of two years of post-graduate study at a relevant school of design.
The first year is dedicated entirely to learning the basics of animation, while the second year allows students to put their theoretical studies into practice through the creation of short films, which also allows them to widen their knowledge of the equipment and tools used for making animation in 2D. The third year focuses on working in teams to create six films that are used as opening features in the International Festival of Animation in Annecy.
It is now possible for third year students to specialise either in 2D or 3D digital animation and to broaden their experience of programmes used for each technique.

The teachers are professionals who actively work in the field, and who take courses regularly and oversee the work of the students.

The practicals of the course take place in a animation studio where teachers closely follow the progress made by each individual student. Exercises, lasting around three weeks, are classified according to increased levels of difficulty and are monitored assiduously by one of the teaching staff.

The activities of the Gobelins School will be outlined at the Future Film Festival in a lecture explaining the process of short animated film production.

A series of short films will be shown, representing selections shown as opening features at the Festival of Annecy, which were the final assignments of teams of students (from 2000 to 2005), while several short films produced for Canal J in 2004 and 2005, and various other animations produced in 2D and 3D, will also be shown.
Among these are the memorable shorts presented at the 2004 and 2005 Festivals of Annecy, Le Building and La Migration Bigoudenn.

Reportage de Eric Rittatore pour afNews/Gianfranco Goria sur l’édition 2006 du FFF et la conférence de Fred :

Less idealistic and more concrete, Professor Fred Nagorny of Gobelins, the école de l’image which for years now has been preparing the beautiful opening themes of the Annecy Festival: having to report directly to the school’s financing companies, the courses are constantly updated and reset based on market needs and new technologies, and it is therefore not surprising the notable maturity of the students’ works, even in simple preliminary exercises… on the other hand, the work purpose is a prerogative of French animation schools, inserted into a production system that stimulates and encourages the professional training of students.
